The Other Shapes of Art<\/strong> is a roundtable to be held at Harvard University <\/strong>on the 24th-25th April 2020<\/strong>, hosted by the Film Study Center and Critical Media Practice (CMP) \u2013 Harvard University<\/em>, produced by Ramdom* and it is a fundamental moment of a new ambitious work of art by artist Emilio Vavarella<\/strong> entitled rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project is one of the winners of\nthe VI edition of Italian Council\n(2019), <\/strong>program to promote Italian contemporary art in the\nworld by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian\nMinistry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. The work of art will\nbecome part of the permanent collection of MAMbo\n\u2013 Museum of Modern Art <\/strong>in Bologna (Italy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work of art that represents the\ngenome of the artist will be the result of a performative process and consists\nof three elements: a large fabric<\/strong>, a\nJacquard loom<\/strong> and a video<\/strong> of the production process of the\nfabric. The fabric, which represents the artist\u2019s own genetic code point by\npoint, is made with a 19th century Jacquard loom (the first industrial binary\ntechnology). The final fabric translates visually the genetic code that \u201cgives\nshape\u201d to the artist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work begins with a very intimate\napproach in a very specific context, such as Southern Italy and the\nMediterranean area, in order to raise more general issues, such as the digitalization of DNA and life<\/strong>, the\nrelationship between machines and labor<\/strong>,\nthe computer<\/strong> as an engineering<\/strong> object<\/strong> and the computer as a tool for craftsmanship<\/strong>, automation<\/strong>,\nweaving as a computing technique<\/strong>, the female condition<\/strong> in Southern Italy\nand in relation to computational\ntechnologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These themes will be explored in a\ncollegial manner and from different vantage points during the roundtable at\nHarvard, bringing together artists, curators, researchers and thinkers from\ndifferent contexts and countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be a fundamental moment in\nthe project’s development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
